While this may well (as someone told me earlier tonight) not be the best screenshot ever, it shows the tree-view currently existing in KVirc. i believe this is the sort of thing you're talking about? :)

A quick look on XChat's website provided me with this pictorial evidence of XChat also adopting something similar... In my personal opinion much more pleasant looking ;)
