I really think bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=422798 is related to
this one. I included a screen-recording in this bug. 
I wasn't aware that my system "scaled" the output to the screen but is was
(very little). After I set the scaling to 100% the ugly distortion was
completely gone.
