Chris: thanks, I've got a feeling that you may be right.

Now I tried "kate" - the same thing, it opens without the menu on the machine
where the problem is. On the old machine that has no such problem, "kate" opens
with menu.

Sorry that I reported that for "konsole", but this is where I first observed
it.

If you need me to check anything else to find the root cause, just say a word.
I was just about to reinstall the whole system if it can't be repaired.
