Yes it depends on the font (and even shape sometimes on the shape)

Buggy:
  Noto Mono
  Nimbus Mono L
  Liberation Mono (regular)
  Liberation Mono (italics):  oh, different: adds a space like äb -> a"b
  Hack (regular)
  Courier Pitch 10
  Ubuntu Mono

Correct:
  Monospace
  FreeMono
  Dejavu Sans Mono
  Courier
  Hack (italics)
