Makes no sense if this button is not on the tab. 

Take for example what happens if I have 5 tabs open and I want to close the
second one - I have to activate it an then I have to move the mouse over to the
right side to close the tab - bad UX. Instead of having the application icon on
each tab it would be much nicer to have a close button.
