4.8.5 is a fairly old release. The fix was for 4.9.3, and indeed the problem
was fixed for me. A workaround is to set the Documents path in System Settings
/ Account Details.

However, I experience a residual problem where the default download directory
for Akregator is ~/Documents. Whether that's related to this bug, I don't know.
