I wanted to come in here and give an update on what the reason for this
behavior was. Apparently, gnome-settings-daemon has some collision with KDE. If
gnome-settings-daemon is running, KDE will have tough time selecting text with
double click.

Once I removed gnome-settings-daemon from the picture, the issue is reolved.
