command 'strace mc' brought to light, that mc during startup waited for a lot
of poll() requests.
So I found out that there was a hostname mismatch (command 'hostname' was
different from what was in /etc/hosts). After manual editing /etc/hosts now mc
starts up lightning fast. :-)

Please could someone mark this bug report as IRRELEVANT or something like that
