After some more fiddling, installing otf-freefont (there is an otf
version of FreeMono in it)

and fc-cache. It works now. FreeMono looks good. And the spacing is
not off anymore.

I dont have a clue why it works. But it does.

(In the meantime I installed consolata and fiddled with another bug in
yakuake, so I cannot really say what the steps were to make it work)
