The bug still exists in 4.8.5 but, as you wrote, it became much more subtle.

When I use mcedit on localhost and select a paragraph, the padding whitespace
is not copied.
But when I ssh to a remote Centos 5.7 box and use mcedit there, I hit the bug
again - padding spaces are copied to clipboard.
To make the whole issue even more confusing, when I ssh to a Fedora Core 6 PC,
copying works as expected - no trailing padding spaces.

It behaves as expected anywhere if I use this patch:
