then what do you suggest for making fonts look smooth instead of jagged? 
afaik, anti-aliasing is exactly the solution to this problem when you have a
display that consists of a finite array of regularly shaped fixed pixels.  just
because anti-aliasing might make it harder to track down some problems doesn't
mean it's a bad solution.

the new screenshot shows the same problem without anti-aliasing.  you can see
more clearly that the letters are wider (for example, the 'a' is 6 pixels wide
instead of 5) but the spacing between them is the same.
