With some help i managed to figure out why this happens.
Konsole starts a login shell even when under the Manage Profiles/General tab,
the Command is set to /bin/bash. Apparently that is not enough for yakuake.
If i change /bin/bash to /bin/bash -l , only then yakuake starts as a login
shell.
