This only appears to happen for synthetically bolded fonts.

That is, fonts that do not ship with a bold version. For example, Inconsolata
only ships with a Medium/Roman; there are no bold, italicized, or bold
italicized version. While this appear in the font selection dialog, they are
rendered dynamically. This implies the problem is lower down in the Qt or
Fontconfig/Xft level of the font rendering stack.

I've been trying to turn off fontconfig's synthetic bolding (AFAIK, it's just a
file in /etc/fonts/? but apparently not), but haven't been successful.
