New KDE user/tester here ( using Kubuntu 9.10, 64-bit, KDE 4.4.1 :-).

I can confirm this bad appearance too. I use Droid Sans Mono, 8pt and after
unsuccessfully playing around with setting the DPI, anti-aliasing and hinting
options, I gave up.

Under Gnome I never had this problem (but I had set DPI to 92). Don't know if
this is relevant.
