I just hit this problem after installing an update to libfreetype6 following
the expiry of the hinting patents.

I was using Droid Sans Mono, which doesn't have a proper bold variant.
Switching to Consolas, which has a proper bold variant, fixes the problem.

So I'm thinking that the problem is TrueType hinting behavior when generating
faux-bold fonts in software.
