After further testing it does appear that removing the code in comment #18 does
indeed fix the problem.  In fact, it allows you to remove the stripping of
trailing spaces from the active lines.  It should also reduce the memory usage
of the history buffer for short lines.  Updated patch attached.

Now the echo "   " selection works in the active lines.  (Whereas before it
only worked with lines in the history buffer!)
