I wouldn't be so quick to close this.  After a system reboot, I discovered 
that text selection was working on a direct log in (first time that's ever 
happened).  Later, I logged out to kdm and then had to log in 2x before 
getting a session where selection worked.

Something is unquestionably broken and it would be a mistake, IMHO, to 
close the issue until it's understood and fixed.
