I couldn't reproduce by replacing my local version of Konsole (binary +
libraries) with the one from that package.

Could you try backing up and removing:

~/.kde/share/config/konsolerc
~/.kde/share/apps/konsole

(Might be ~/.kde4 - I'm not sure which Kubuntu defaults to)
