I haven't seen this in any terminal program but surely it exists somewhere. 
Anyway, I would like the background of the console to slightly change colors
for each command entered.

So the first command I enter and its output will be shown in a black
background.  Then the second command and its output will be shown in a dark
gray background color.

I don't know if this is even possible, but it would help visibility with some
separation
