Well I also suffered from this bug, and agree that this is a regression from
the 3.5 version.

That being said, my own workaround is to use wmctrl: adding

wmctrl -i -r $WINDOWID -e 0,-1,-1,746,434

to my .cshrc gives me a nice 90x21 konsole on startup...
