This issue is joined at the navel with that of line selection from 
mouse-aware console apps via shift-button-1 (reported by myself and 
others).  Konsole and/or the KDE4 environment seems to sporadically come 
up in a state where neither feature will function.  Symptoms are per the 
above report: Cursor flickers rapidly but will mark only a few characters 
worth of a swipe and stores nothing to the cut buffer or clipboard.

When I observe the problem, a logout to kdm and back will almost always 
correct it.  Sometimes it takes a few tries.  Whenever the line selection 
is operational, so is the column select (and vice-versa).

Since I'm eventually able to obtain a functional environment, this has 
moved from show-stopper bug to extreme annoyance (on my sliding scale, at 
least).  Still, would be terrific if the root cause was understood and the 
defect fixed.
