Actually with the default settings, Shift+Insert and Ctrl+Shift+V both paste
from the clipboard.  Ctrl+Shift+Insert or middle-mouse click pastes the
selection.

I take your point about the confusion having a selection and copy-paste buffer
sometimes causes.  I personally tend only to use explicit copy and paste and
ignore the selection.
