One of the basic tenets of Linux or UNIX is that files and devices can be
treated the same. One of the basic tenets of terminal emulators is that they
can connect to remote devices. Why would you not want to include this
functionality in the GUI? The complexity to implement is minimal and the
functionality makes sense.
