Indeed - MC doesn't look great with the default color scheme.  Linux colors
works better for that application.

Very little has actually been removed - most functionality has just been
reorganised.

That isn't necessary any more.  Whenever you change settings (via Settings ->
Edit Current Profile) they are supposed to persist when you close and re-open
the application.  The need to change settings and then 'save as default' proved
confusing for many people.  If settings don't persist then that is a bug.

Background transparency can be adjusted in the UI.  Transparency for individual
colors is still supported but is not adjustable from the UI at the moment, you
have to edit the .colorscheme files manually.
