I had a go at implementing this as suggested.  I found it very confusing to work with.  I also think it might not be necessary any more because of the split view feature which makes it possible to view several sessions in the same window at the same time.

For example, if you have two tabs open, each running ssh connected to a different machine and you want to compare files on each then pressing Ctrl+Shift+T splits the view top/bottom and you can then see what is happening in both sessions at the same time.
