Chatting with ossi bringed up another very interesting usecase:

Fact: ctrl-c doesn't work in konsole
Next step: launch xterm and launch 
  strace -ttt -o konsole.trace konsole --nofork

Now in that started konsole app, 'make' breaks just ok!
Wonders :)
strace fixes things :)
