I think the change was accidental as a by-product of re-writing the selection code.

That is exactly what happens.  Open a text editor, type in "ls" and create a new line.  Select "ls" and the new line and paste it into Konsole.

The change is that Konsole in 3.5 appears to append a new line character to the end of the text when making the selection if the rest of the line (beyond the last character) is selected.

I did not notice this behavior, so Konsole in 4.0 just copies the characters into the selection buffer until it gets to the last character on the line and then stops.  If you actually select one or more characters on the line below you can see that Konsole does actually include a new line in the right place.
