Until recently links did open with a single left click.  This behaviour proved highly frustrating for several users because:

1)  They often wanted to select blocks of text or words inside a link, without activating the link.

2)  They wanted to paste text into the terminal window without caring where they clicked within it.

3)  They wanted to give focus to the terminal window without activating links that happened to be in the pseudo-random place which was clicked.

For these reasons the single-click to open functionality was removed.
