You mentioned that you encounter this in xterm as well in your original report. 

xterm uses no KDE components at all, so I suspect the problem is occurring at a lower level.  You could try gnome-terminal and see if the problem is apparent there as well.

I suggest that your distribution is the best place to go for help in this case.
