My bad, the patches for the port are in:   
/usr/local/ports/x11/kdebase3/ (I had a thinko when I typed in that spurious kdm path)   
  
It'd be easier, in any case, to just compile the ports, then it's easier to narrow down if 
it's something specific to your case, or it's the same bug that we've fixed there. 
 
In any case, I'm nearly certain this is fixed, and yes, it's a BSD specific bug, but one  
we're at least somewhat on top of.
