OS/Compiler notes: 

bash is not reading my .bashrc when run in Konsole.  i can even start a new bash shell from the original shell in Konsole and it won't either (even if i pass --init-file ~/.bashrc to bash).  when run from a regular terminal screen, bash works just fine upon login.
