Addition to this.. running a new konsole, and resizing it and stuff a bit, I ended up with this: http://www.lammah.com/~lerris/snap.jpg

green/grey lines running across the top, the square box split into 4 quadrants in the middle, etc. these don't seem to be restricted to those areas either - on another  konsole session, there are boxes like that all over the place.
