After upgrading from KDE 2.2.2 in Mandrake 8.2, to KDE 3.0.0, my system kept locking, not completely, but i finally realized that it was the Konsole, i'm using and AMD T-Bird 1.0 GHz, 1.5GB PC133 SDRAM, 2 40GB HD's, and a Soyo K7-VTA-B mobo.  i'm not sure if that info will help, but i hope it does.
