Failing to compile on Debian Etch

I beginning to suspect I know what is going on....

The new system uses gcc 4.0.4.  I've had all sorts of problems with gcc 
4+, so I am rebuilding the toolchain, kdelibs, and all that on the new 
system with gcc-3.4.

 From what I can gather, this has to do with visibility and .hidden symbols.
