Felix,

create a new account with the type you want. Give it a similar name, just to differentiate them. Then open the existing account in the ledger and use Ctrl+A to select all transaction in it. Then open the context menu with the right mouse button. Select the 'Move transaction to...' entry and select the new account. Then delete the old one and rename the new one to the old name.
