I do not know if my contribution applys to the actual problem. But I 
would like to remember, that gmp seems to be a very sensible program, 
depending on the hardware it has been build for. I had a lot of problems 
some time ago, and got the advice from Bruce to rebuild gmp for the 
simplest hardware possible. See blfs-support at lists.linuxfromscratch.org
