The very first thing to do is to ensure you take frequent backups, 
either manually or automatically.

Can you change the extension .kmy to .gz and uncompress it.  Then open 
it in a text editor and see if it looks like a normal xml file, or just 
rubbish.

Do you have any old kmm files you could compare with?
