Thanks Thomas. I had tried the font settings, even taking them down to
6pt. Things got smaller, but no more digits. In desperation I tried
20pt. All columns then expanded and showed all digits - I think I lost
the details column in the process. I then gradually reduced the point
size until I have once again a workable system. Sounds weird, but thats
what happened! 

I have to admit I had been trying out various settings in
"systemsettings" which is a KDE application that Allan suggested I try
on Mint back in 2011 to control the ledger colours. Some wires might
have got crossed in the different settings.
