Thank you for the time you spent to figure all of this out. You are right,
somewhere there is a calculation for the column width, but that is located
somewhere in the code of the Qt widget we use to display the page
(QTextBrowser).  Unfortunately, and AFAICT, KMyMoney has no means to control
the width of a column.

Maybe, we find someone who can change the whole logic of the home page to QML
where those controls might exist.
