--- Comment #2 from Jack <ostroffjh at users.sourceforge.net> ---
Many years later and things have changed, but are not really any better. As
far as I can tell, currently (5.2.2) if you type anything in the search field,
NO balances are shown. This means there are still several conditions under
which a running balance is not shown, but could be. One is if Reconciled State
is the first sort item instead of the transaction date (I can't find that
request right now) or if Number is the first sort item. However, filtering is
different from changing the sort order. If the sort order is valid for a
running balance (most commonly transaction date first) the the question would
be whether you compute the balance on ALL or only the DISPLAYED transactions.
If you calculate the runing balance using ALL transactions and then apply the
filter, the balance numbers will be correct, but might it might not be possible
to calculate them based only on displayed items. I don't know how hard it
would be to implement, but I can imagining calculating/displaying the balance
(specifically in an Investment Account Ledger) for those Securities for which
all transactions are still displayed, but not otherwise (such as if the filter
removes transactions base on the memo rather than the security.
