--- Comment #27 from Brendan <KDE at Coupe7.com> ---
I haven't had a bank that works with Direct Connect in several years (in the
US). Most banks still provide an OFX or QFX download option but my daily
checking and savings accounts only provide CSV files.

I mentioned recently that I think the CSV file import process could be greatly
improved and maybe the OFX import process could be handled differently.
Basically download the files to a known location with known file names (both
saved in the account settings) and treat the local files as we do online
sources. When you run Update all accounts, those configured to use local files
would import the local OFX and CSV files with all of the appropriate settings
saved in the account settings. I had a longer explanation recently on the
mailing list and I would be willing to expand on it if anyone is willing to
work on the code.

This was all related to the missing options when importing an OFX file with
WebConnect rather than downloading it and importing it via the file import
option. It skips the window asking about some import options. Those options are
available in the online tab which is missing unless an account is mapped
(Direct Connect). Basically I would like direct connect to locally saved files
(CSV and OFX) with the settings needed to import them correctly.

One of the problems I'm having with importing CSV files is changes in my ledger
that make no sense. Transactions. specifically a weekly paycheck, disappear or
change, sometimes after being reconciled. I haven't reported a bug since I
haven't been able to figure out what is going on but every time I reconcile the
account I have to redo some transactions.

I only mention this because I wonder if it would be easier to convert CSV files
to OFX files before importing them. I briefly looked for ways to do that but
have not followed through yet. It appears that the OFX import process is bullet
proof (except when banks don't follow the standard) so I wonder if mapping
columns in the CSV file to the OFX fields would make sense. The matching
process would be better than what I get with CSV imports.
