Split transaction editor - two oddities

In capturing screenshots for the new handbook, I noticed that the line  
"Transaction amount" at the bottom of the splits editor was cut off -  
missing the bottom quarter or so.  However, when I checked using my own  
personal data file, it looks just fine.  Any ideas why they would show  
differently?  Note I was running them as two different users, my own  
data file as myself, and the sample data file as a user I created just  
to capture screen shots.  I suppose the two users have some different  
display related settings, but it does seem odd.

Separately, both users show extra space between the "New" and "Merge"  
buttons on the right.  Making the window shorted does remove this  
space, and it only seems to get large enough for one button.  However,  
looking into the .ui file, it seems it is an intentional spacing.  I  
certainly can't claim it's wrong, but I'm curious what purpose it was  
meant to serve.
