I am certain I run 5.1.3 - at least thats what KMM reports under "about" - but
maybe the persistance of the Tip of the day is a Quirk of the german version?

Concerning the additional columns in the ledger I think it would be very useful
to display the assigned category of individual entries and maybe the attatched
note. This may make it less clear for some people but having it as an option
might be worth it. I know they are available when you activate the full detail
view but that also creates a lot of visual clutter because of the three-lined
layout.
