What window mananger are you using?  When the dropdown appears in the "wrong"
place, are you sure there is room for it in the usual place, or might it extend
off the bottom of the screen?  Some window managers will move it in such cases,
although I'm pretty sure I've only seen it put just above the anchor in that
case, instead of opening below.
