You can use the Appimage until an equivalent version is available for your
distribution.  You are correct that the appimage is a complete, standalone
version, and copying any files from it to your system is not likely to have a
good outcome.  I can't say for sure why a newer version works where an older
one does not, but lots of bugs were fixed between then and now.
