Terminology issue: that's a crash, not a freeze.  A freeze would just sit there
forever, until you kill it.  If it dumps core, it has crashed, and I wonder if
there might be a backtrace someplace.  I don't know BSD, but you could probably
extract some useful information from that core dump, although I have no idea
what tools you would need to do so.  

It sounds like it has something to do with the ledger.  Can you display the
ledger, right click on a transaction and at least get the pop up context menu?
