Apologies to the group. I had previously updated many packages on my
distribution, and I suspect there were inconsistencies in the way the updated
system handled the File Open dialogs. Rebooting the system allowed everything
to work well.

I had tried to delete this issue before it was disseminated, but was unable to
do so. I therefore marked it as resolved.
