This sounds very much like something discussed on the mailing list 07 December
13, with an update by the OP 24 October 14, including reference to
https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-shell-list/2014-May/msg00033.html.

The underlying issues appears to be that some part of Gnome is checking if KMM
is still alive, and KMM is not replying.  I don't know if this can be done in a
way independent of specific Desktop Environment or Window Manager.
