Just before you move on, and to be sure there's no misunderstanding, as 
you said "Selection Text Color Background changes don't seem to to 
anything to the
text [it should not change the text colour, just the background] within 
the green highlight box.", there are two settings, one for background 
and another for the text colour.  Try changing the background colour, 
exit Settings, the restart KMM and see if that colour change has been 
picked up.  If that works, now try the text colour.  If still wrong, 
would you set out, step by step, all your actions.  Sorry to be 
pedantic, but this really should work.
