I know how I have been charged in the past - but other tradesmen
(carpenters, plumbers, electricians) may be different.

If you go grocery shopping and buy five different fruits, would you
create a split for each one, to use each category? When I go grocery
shopping, I often buy many dozen items, so I couldn't imaging tracking
each of them. However, I have had in my imagination the thought of
getting home and scanning each item as I unpack, in reverse of the
scanning at the store. This way I could control the inventory in my
kitchen. I really would love to do this, but I just don't think it is
realistic.

In creating categories, you should think of how they will look after
several years, and what sort of reports you would create and use to
manage your finances.

Whether this gets implemented depends on whether any of the developers
think it is important enough - so my guess would be "eventually" but
probably not soon.

Then you need to think of what your objective is and how you might do
it. Personally, for this type of tracking, I would create a syntax to
use in the memo field ("QTY=10" for example) create a report that
included that information, and then create a program or spreadsheet to
process the report or csv export and produce the information I want.

Perhaps this could eventually be combined with the request for tags (I
forget the term which was used in the wishlist) which are sort of like
a second/parallel category. This could be used so you could track fuel
and repairs and tires, but also track whether they were for your car,
your motorcycle, or your lawnmower. Right now, you can do one or the
other, or else get an explosion of nested categories.
